Quake claimed lives of 11 Pakistani journalists

Among the nearly one lakh people who died in the devastating
October 8 earthquake were 11 Pakistani journalists and their
at least 69 family members, a preliminary report based on the
first phase of assessment mission of the Pakistan Press Foundation
said on Saturday. Besides, as many as 242 journalists and other
media personnel suffered personal or property losses, and 17
journalists and their 15 family members were injured, while
171 houses of media persons were destroyed and 54 others sustained
damages in the disaster, said the report released by PPF Secretary-General
Owais Aslam Ali. Quoting the report, The News said that out
of the 20 press clubs and offices of unions of journalists in
the quake-hit areas, 12 were either destroyed or damaged. Majority
of losses to media personnel and organisations took place in
Muzaffarabad, where 10 media personnel were killed and 11 injured.
Fifty family members of media personnel were killed and another
10 injured. One hundred and nine houses of media personnel were
destroyed and another 12 suffered damage. The PPF assessment
mission visited the quake-hit areas of five districts of NWFP
and three districts of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) one week
after the quake from October 15-23. The areas visited included
Abbottabad, Mansehra, Balakot, Batgram, Shinkiari, Garhi Habibullah,
Bufa, Jabori, Jabar, Dhodhiyal in NWFP and Muzaffarabad, Garhi
Dopata, Majhoi, Siran, Kohala Bakot, Dheerkot, Arja, Bagh and
Rawlakot. According to the report, lack of safe space was a
major problem for rehabilitation of the media organisations
and media persons in PoK. The 29-page report contains the names
of journalists, their family members killed and injured, details
of destroyed and damaged houses of journalists along with their
names and press clubs.
