Bachchan's stomach ache has media in a tizzy
New
Delhi: Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan's stomach ache was
one of the big stories for the media today. However, Dr Naresh
Trehan, Director of the Escorts Heart Institute, proved it to
be the veritable damp suib when he said that Bachchan's aches
were within normal health parameters, and there was nothing
to be concerned about. In fact, he further went on to say that
the Big B would be discharged by the evening and would be returning
to his bungalow in Mumbai by the evening. Dr Trehan, one
of the world's leading cardiologists, said, "A CT scan, ultra
sound and blood tests were conducted on the superstar. He has
stomach ache only and he does not have any problem with heart."
Besides Amitabh's wife and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan,
son Abhishek, daughter Shweta and son-in-law Nikhil Nanda, the
celebrities visiting him in hospital included Uttar Pradesh
Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and Bachchan's close friend
and Samajwadi party leader Amar Singh. "He does not have any
serious problem. It was just that he complained of stomach ache.
We all know some doctors of this hospital very closely, that's
why we chose to take him here. His sonography and other test
reports are okay, " said Singh. He also seemed somewhat annoyed
with media's behaviour and wryly said," He is quite well and
can talk too. You have nothing to worry so much. However, I
am very grateful to see you are so worried about his health".
Bachchan, arguably India's best and most loved actor, was named
"Superstar of the Millennium" in a BBC Online Poll in 1999,
ahead of luminaries such as Charlie Chaplin, Sir Lawrence Olivier,
and Marlon Brando. Bachchan, who is currently enjoying a second,
more loved acting stint in career, rose like a phoenix after
a slump in the last few years.
Bachchan started his film career in 1969 with the film "Saat
Hindustani", which was a flop. It was folowed by a series of
too successful movies at the box office. He hit big time in
the movies in 1973 with "Zanjeer" and followed it up with "Deewar"
and many other hits. He has been a popular cine star with at
least three generations of movie lovers. Bachchan was considered
'finished' in the late nineties after a superstar status for
20 years with a string of flops and failed political and business
ambitions. But he made an unexpected but very successful comeback
on Television as host of a popular quiz series "Kaun Banega
Crorepati?" based on "who wants to be a millionaire?" The stint
put him right back on the number one position in Bollywood,
reaffirming his reputation as the living legend of Indian cinema
with a series of high profile films including Baghban (God)
and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (Some times happy, some times sad).
