Six die in Coimbatore in landslide

Coimbatore: A baby girl was miraculously rescued on Wednesday, even as six people were killed in a landslide on the outskirts of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu as heavy rains lashed the area. The victims were celebrating Dusshera when the loose soil caved in, burying them in their houses. Rescuers took almost four hours to clear several tons of mud. "Today at around 5.30 in the morning it started raining very heavily. There was a wall being constructed and I guess because the construction was not proper, the wall collapsed," Radhakrishnan, a local, said. Witnesses said at three people, including a baby girl have been rescued. "A woman, a girl and a small child have so far been rescued. Work is still on at the site," Ravi Chandran, the citizen's representative of the area, said. Rains in September are not uncommon for the Coimbatore region, home to the Nilgiris literally translated as the Blue Mountains, but the downpour this year has been unusually heavy.
