Delhi: Former Justice Chief Justice of Madras High Court
Markandeya Katju on Wednesday was sworn in as new Chief Justice
of the Delhi High Court. The oath taking ceremony, held at
the Raj Niwas lawns under the administration of Lt Governor
B L Joshi here, was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila
Dikshit, some of her Cabinet colleagues, several judges of
high court, subordinate courts and members of the bar. He
succeeds Justice B C Patel who retired in August this year.
Justice B A Khan, who took office as the acting Chief Justice,
was transferred to Jammu and Kashmir as a judge. Praising
Katjus work as a judge, Joshi termed his appointment as a
"very fortunate" one for Delhi for he was highly experienced.
The 59-year-old Justice Katju, who succeeded Justice B C Patel
as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court who retired in August
this year, started his career at the Allahabad High Court
after taking his law degree from Allahabad University in 1967.
Later, he was promoted to judge at the High Court. However,
he also served as a member in international association of
refugee law judges before being promoted to this post.
