India turns down US aid for quake victims

New Delhi: India on Wednesday turned down any aid from the US to tackle the post quake scenario in Jammu and Kashmir. Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee was quoted by a news agency as saying in Santiniketan that US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld had called to enquire if India needed help from Washington in view of the havoc wrecked by Saturday quake. Mukherjee said that he had told Rumsfeld that he (Mukherjee) had toured the quake-affected areas, and it was assessed that there was no need for any US aid, at least for the moment. According to the agreements signed between India and the United States in July this year, there is a clause about both countries helping each other in the event of natural calamities.
