Heavy rains batter Tamil Nadu, claims nine lives

     Chennai: The early advent of the Northeast monsoon in Tamil Nadu resulted in the state receiving heavy rainfall for the past couple of days, and the death due to the rain, rising to nine, including two in Chennai. The Meteorological Department said that the monsoon was active over Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Pondicherry. "It has rained at many places over Tamil Nadu in the past 24 hours. As far as the forecast for the next 24 hours is concerned it will rain over many places of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. There will be heavy rainfall at one or two places. The Northeast monsoon has set in over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and adjourning areas of Karnataka and Kerala. If you look at the normal pattern it will continue till the last week of December. That is the period of Northeast monsoons," said SR Ramanan, Director of the Meteorological Department. He said that the Northeast monsoon had formed a low pressure off the coast of Bay of Bengal, causing torrential rains, adding that the rains would continue in the coastal areas for the next 72- hours.

     Earlier, heavy rains clogged the streets of Chennai throughout the day yesterday, with some light showers being witnessed during the day. Taking its first toll, an old tree fell down on a car passing by at Pursaiwallkam area of Chennai city, killing two of the three occupants, who were returning after Diwali shopping. Krishnamurthy, who was at the wheels along with his wife were crushed to death, while their 12 year old son Karthick was rescued by the Fire and Rescue Service personnel. Yesterday, the maximum recorded rains was 150 mm at the Nungambakkam unit, followed by Krishnagiri and Sulur at about 130 mm, and at Kanyakumari it was put at 120 mm. On an average Tamil Nadu receives 480 mm of rainfall during October to December accounting for 50 percent of the annual downpour.
