Pak ready to accept Israeli quake-aid

Islamabad: Though there has not been any quake-aid offer from Israel so far, the Pakistan government has said that it won't mind accepting assistance from it (Israel) since it was also a UN member, and the world body had sent out a flash appeal to the entire international community to extend all possible help to Islamabad during this hour of crisis. A Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said that since there was no diplomatic interaction with Tel Aviv, the latter had not made any direct or specific quake aid offer. "There has been no calls from Tel Aviv, but the prime minister has said that there are no restrictions on anyone contributing for relief efforts.

The UN has sent out a flash appeal and since Israel is a member of the UN it may respond to this. The American Jewish Congress are US citizens and if any others want to donate to the President's Relief Fund, then they will be welcome," The News quoted her as saying. The paper further said that the decision to accept financial support and equipment from Israel came during a telephone conversation between President Pervez Musharraf and Jack Rosen, the chairman of the American Jewish Congress-Council for World Jewry, where Musharraf reportedly said: "I am pleased that Pakistan will receive help from the Jewish community and from Israel. I call on the Jewish community to show its solidarity with Pakistani victims of the earthquake by joining the relief effort. The human face of natural disaster is the same wherever such disasters occur and regardless of the nationality, ethnicity, or religious faith of those who are victimised. Only last month, Pakistan had made its first bid to promote friendly relations with Israel after decades of hostility.
