India launches computers at 229 dollars
by Gyanendra Kumar Keshri

New Delhi: India's latest low cost personal computer aimed at spreading information technology in the country was unveiled by the country's Minister for Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran on Thursday evening. Advances Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) together with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, in association with HCL and Microsoft launched what they term as "India's most affordable home computer" as part of AMD's Global 50x15 Program. It is aimed at accelerating internet penetration in the country and widening the usership of computers by making them more affordable.

The machine was conceived in response to concerns that India, despite being at the forefront of a global software revolution, had a large mass of people with no access to computers. "Today we have from HCL a product for 9990 (229 dollars) with a 1.6 gigahertz speed, a 40 GB hard disk, a 15 inch monitor, 52X CD-ROM, keyboard and all the works. And they've got one step forward now, joining hands with Microsoft by giving a started version that is in the Hindi version for 11,240 (258 dollars)," said Maran who presided over the launch in New Delhi. The PC bundled with Microsoft XP Starter Edition and affordable broadband solutions from BSNL look to significantly increase broadband penetration in India. India is a globally recognised software services powerhouse but hardware sales have not met with a similar success due to high input costs and tax rates. India has about five million PCs in use.
