Muzaffarabad has no space left to bury the dead

Muzaffarabad: Amid reports emerging from Muzafarrabad that the entire PoK Capital was razed in Saturday's earthquake, and that it would take several years to rebuild the town, the rescue teams are running out of space to bury the dead, even as they continue to pull out more and more bodies from beneath the debris. According to The News, all the cemeteries are running full, and the people are left with no alternative to dig up old graves and place the corpses in them. "What else can we do......I have no means to take them elsewhere to be buried," the paper quoted one Yousef Khan as saying as he watched three young men dig up an old grave for his wife and daughter who died in the quake, said to be the worst ever in 100 years.

The paper said that the corpses still under the rubble have started emanating stench, and everyone walks around with a facemask to avoid the smell. It added that the survivors helplessly stand still in shock, staring at their ruined homes, not knowing what to do next. "I know my wife and daughter are under there. But I have no one to help me dig," the paper quoted an unidentified resident as saying. Elsewhere, as residents group together to help each other scrambling for the bodies of their relatives. As per Muslims traditions, a dead body should be buried within 24 hours and care is taken that a corpse is buried facing towards Mecca. But, these rites are ignored because of the sheer scale of the disaster and the lack of resources available, said the report.
