Rashtrapati
Bhavan's 'No' to Nanavati panel
New
Delhi: In a letter sent to the Nanavati Commision probing
Gujarat riots, the Rashtrapati Bhawan, has reportedly refused
to hand over the letters exchanged between the then Prime
Minister A B Vajpayee and President K R Narayanan. The decision
is understood to have been taken in public interest as the
role of the Indian Army was also mentioned in the report submitted
by the committee, which the Rashtrapati Bhawan feels is highly
sensitive. The Nanavati-Shah Commission probing the Godhra
carnage and its aftermath had twice sought Rashtrapati Bhavan
for copies of the letters written by Narayanan to Vajpayee
about the deployment of Army in Gujarat when riots broke out
there. However, using 'President's privilege', the Rashtrapati
Bhavan had refused to do so after consultating the Union Government,
but the two-member commission had again urged the letters
to be produced before it. On February 27, 2002, several pilgrims
were burnt alive at the Godhra rail station, allegdly by a
Muslim mob. Thousands were later charred to death, mainly
Muslims, in reprisal attacks, which followed the Sabarmati
Express carnage.
