Shoot-at-sight orders in curfew-bound Mau

Mau (Uttar Pradesh): The Uttar Pradesh Government has issued shoot-at-sight orders in the curfew-bound town of Mau in the wake of the death toll rising there following communal clashes that broke out on Thursday. So far, five people have died and over 85 people have been arrested in connection with the riots which broke out over Dussehra festivities, sources said. The shoot-at-sight orders were issued by Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Yashpal Singh and the state's Principal Secretary (Home) Alok Sinha after a review of the overall situation in the town. Assuring that the situation in the town would be brought under control within six hours, the officials said additional forces are being deployed in the troubled areas. Meanwhile, the bodies of the two persons killed today are undergoing a post-mortem at the district hospital. The BJP has demanded the arrest of local MLA Mukhtar Ansari, who they alleged was vitiating the atmosphere in the town despite a ban on the entry and movement of political leaders.
