One woman raped every third day in Karachi
Karachi:
As many as 77 women were raped in Karachi during last
nine months, with one woman being subjected to the gory crime
every third day, the data of crimes against women compiled
by the Karachi Police has revealed. According to the figures
released by the police, the crimes against women had recorded
an upward trend, even as 71 women raped in 2004, 78 in 2003
and 61 in 2002. The police data showed that out of the total
77 rape cases reported, 38 were solved in which the rapists
were held, but the conviction rate was low because most of
the rapists were bailed out due to lack of "credible or medical"
evidence, the Dawn reported. Apart from the rape incidents,
50 sodomy cases were reported in various localities in the
city during the last nine months, as compared to 65 cases
in 2004, 72 in 2003 and 51 in 2002. The victims of sodomy
were mostly between four years and 16 years of age, the police
sources said. Reacting to the situation of crimes against
women, the city's top cop said that with more media coverage,
more and more rape incidents were being covered than in the
past.
