Curfew relaxed for
women and children in Mau

(Uttar Pradesh): Riot-hit Mau in eastern Uttar Pradesh
remained under curfew for the seventh day today, though the
town's women and children were allowed to collect essential
commodities, including medicines and milk, official sources
said. Even as district authorities described the situation
as 'near normal', four persons trying to to create disturbance
in Kasimpura locality were arrested late last night by the
Rapid Action Force and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC).
District Magistrate Mukesh Meshram described the overall situation
as being under control with the help of round-the-clock patrolling,
especially in sensitive areas. "The situation is now almost
normal", Meshram said. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Governor,
T.V Rajeswar, will visit the town tomorrow for an on-the-spot
assessment of the situation there. He had planned to visit
Mau earlier this week, but had changed his programme on the
request of Chief minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Raj Bhawan
sources said. Nine persons were killed and about 40 people
injured in communal violence that erupted in the town on October
13 over Dussehra celebrations. Cases have already been registered
against over 500 people including independent MLA, Mukhtar
Ansari and BJP member of Legislative Council Ramji Singh for
inciting the riots.
