Curfew relaxed for women and children in Mau

Mau (Uttar Pradesh): Riot-hit Mau in eastern Uttar Pradesh remained under curfew for the seventh day today, though the town's women and children were allowed to collect essential commodities, including medicines and milk, official sources said. Even as district authorities described the situation as 'near normal', four persons trying to to create disturbance in Kasimpura locality were arrested late last night by the Rapid Action Force and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC). District Magistrate Mukesh Meshram described the overall situation as being under control with the help of round-the-clock patrolling, especially in sensitive areas. "The situation is now almost normal", Meshram said. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Governor, T.V Rajeswar, will visit the town tomorrow for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation there. He had planned to visit Mau earlier this week, but had changed his programme on the request of Chief minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Raj Bhawan sources said. Nine persons were killed and about 40 people injured in communal violence that erupted in the town on October 13 over Dussehra celebrations. Cases have already been registered against over 500 people including independent MLA, Mukhtar Ansari and BJP member of Legislative Council Ramji Singh for inciting the riots.
