Peaceful polling

Gaya:
Polling in four Naxal-affected assembly constituency of
Gaya (town), Gaya (Mufassil), Bodh Gaya and Belaganj in Gaya
district on Friday saw about forty per cent turnout and reported
to have gone without any major incident of violence. Official
sources at Gaya said that the polling was peaceful, adding
that the rain brought down the number of voters. According
to senior officials, 65 paramilitary companies and Indian
Air Force helicopters are maintaining a strict ground and
aerial vigil over the election process. High security arrangements
were made by the election Commission for the polls. Superintendent
of Police Sunil Kumar Jha said that over 6,000 personnel were
deployed at 1005 polling stations in Gaya (town), Gaya (mofussil),
Belaganj and Bodh Gaya constituencies. Polling in these places
was postponed on October 18 to today by the Election Commission
to facilitate effective deployment of security forces. Forty-three
candidates are in the fray, including nine each in Belaganj,
Gaya (town) and Bodh Gaya besides 16 in Gaya (mofussil).
