Mumbai building
collapse kills 5
Mumbai:
A wall of a building under construction collapsed in a
Mumbai suburb killing five workers and injuring seven, officials
said on Sunday. The mishap took place at around 11.30 a.m.
when labourers working in the building got trapped under the
debris. "We were working at the site when we noticed that
a wall of the building was caving in. My brother called me
and we ran for safety but there were others who were working
there (who were trapped)," said Raju, an eyewitness. Police
said at least three people were still trapped under the debris.
"It is being said that three people are still trapped in the
debris. One of them died on the spot and one succumbed in
the hospital. Two are admitted in the ICU. Altogether there
are two casualties," said S.G. Sagre, Senior Superintendent
of Police of Andheri, Mumbai. Fire officials reported three
more deaths later. Fire brigades were rushed to the spot to
rescue the victims and search operation is still on. The injured
have all been admitted to a hospital. Sagre said the cause
of the mishap was still being investigated. At least 20 people
have died in three building collapses since June in Mumbai,
where old and badly maintained buildings sometimes collapse
during the heavy monsoon rains from June to September.
