Noted Punjabi author Amrita Pritam passes away
New Delhi: Noted Punjabi author Amrita Pritam died today
evening in New Delhi. She had been bed-ridden for the last
six months. Noted writer, Imroze who had been living with
her for last several decades, was on her bedside at the time
of her death. Pritam's son Shelly Kawatar said that the cremation
would take place at the Green Park crematorium later in the
evening. Born on August 31, 1919 in West Punjab, Amrita wrote
over a hundred books that received raving reviews from critics.
The Bollywood film Pinjar on the India-Pakistan Partition
was also based on her novel by the same name. A former member
of the Rajya Sabha, Pritam was a recipient of the Padma Shree,
and was also awarded the Sahitya Akademi award for her book
Sunedeh. She was also honoured with the the Gyanpeeth Puraskar
for contribution to the Punjabi literature.
