SBI
employees on indefinite strike
New
Delhi: The State Bank of India (SBI) Staff Association
and Officers' Association have gone on an indefinite countrywide
strike from today. The strike comes in the wake of the Centre
failing to address the pension-related demands of the employees.
The employees on strike have demanded an upward revision
of pension and family pension for the 2.10 lakh employees
and officers of the SBI. Sources said that the last revision
of pension was made in the year 1992. Staffs were then entitled
to draw an amount of Rs 4, 250 in addition to admissible
Dearness Allowance and other allowances. After the revision
in the basic salaries of the employees, the associations
are now pressing for increasing the pension amount, which
will be 50 percent of last basic salary drawn.
The
strike called by the two associations is likely to affect
call money and foreign exchange markets since the bank plays
an important role in the two areas, besides adversely affecting
lakhs of customers across the country and also the other
banking operations and services. The strike might halt transactions
in 9,000 branches and 90 percent clearing houses of the
bank across the country while about 8,000 ATMs, including
5,500 of the SBI alone, will also get affected. SBI offers
the convenience of over 5, 500 ATMs in India, the largest
network in the country.
