Mahajan put on dialysis, still critical

Mumbai: Senior BJP leader Pramod Mahajan was put on dialysis on Monday due to the "poor functioning" of his kidneys. Doctors attending on him at the P.D.Hinduja Hospital here said that his medical condition continued to be "critical". "His condition remains critical ... The kidney function is poor and he has been put on dialysis," said Dr Anupam Verma, Director (administration) Mahajan was admitted to the hospital last Saturday after being shot by his younger brother Pravin. Since then, he has undergone two surgeries, including one last evening after his vital parameters became unstable. Excess fluid from his kidneys was drained out and the bleeding in his liver has stopped following Sunday's surgery, which was performed to remove packs placed around his damaged liver. According to doctors, who conducted the operation, including London-based renowned liver transplant specialist Dr. Mohammad Rela, no operation would take place today as was previously scheduled. The minor surgery was carried out following a fluid build-up in Mahajan's damaged liver.

Attack on Mahajan was premeditated: Police

Mumbai: Mumbai Police on Monday said that Saturday's pistol assault on BJP General Secreatry Pramod Mahajan by his younger brother Pravin, was premeditated. Senior police officials told the NDTV news channel that Pravin had made up his mind to kill his brother three weeks ago and had actively begun tracking Pramod Mahajan's whereabouts fifteen days ago. They said that during their interrogation of him, Pravin had revealed that he had read in the papers that Pramod was coming to Mumbai to inaugurate a railway station and told his wife that he was going to go meet him. Pravin said that when he went to meet Pramod, the latter didn't talk to him and kept reading a newspaper. What upset him even more was the fact Pramod did not even ask him how he was doing. Initially he thought of leaving his pistol at Mahajan's feet and going away, just to let him know what he had planned to do. But instead he got up and shot him. Pravin Mahajan says Pramod raised him, but as one raises a dog, never as an equal. "Everyone around Pramod made money, I got nothing out of it. They call him (Pramod) the Rs 2000 crore man. What did I gain from him?" he added. Pravin's friends teased him that he had a famous brother, but that brother of his continuously ignored him and never visited him. That always upset him. "Being a VIP's brother was the curse of my life," he added. Senior police officers say they are yet to establish a clear motive for the shooting and some loose ends still need to be tied up. Meanwhile, Pramod Mahajan's condition is still critical according to the latest medical bulletin from the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai.
