Commandos to protect Indians in Afghanistan

New Delhi: In the wake of the killings of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) jawans and subsequent threats to some other Indians in Afghanistan, India is sending a contingent of para-military forces, consisting of commandos to ensure the security of Indians who are employed there. The Government is sending around 300 personnel of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) to Afghanistan for the security of Indians employed in the work of construction of the highway between Kandahar and Iran border, said official sources. Eighty security personnel have already been sent and they have begun their work, they said. The remaining security personnel will be leaving soon, after their training for the work gets over. Well trained commandos have been deputed from the ITBP to cope with troubles that may arise.

To keep a proper vigil on the security arrangement, a commandant- rank officer will also be deputed. Prior to this, 20 personnel of ITBP were posted in Kabul, to provide protection to the Indian embassy. M R Kutty, a BRO employee in Afghanistan was killed by Taliban terrorists in a tragic incident of kidnapping and murder. Followed by this was M. Ganesh's murder, who was brutally beaten to death with stick. Ganesh was a BRO supervisor.
