14 killed in Leh road mishap

    Leh (Ladakh): Fourteen persons, including 11 women and 3 men were killed while others 16 were injured in a tragic road accident on Leh-Kargil National Highway this evening. The mishap occurred at 8.00 p.m. on Wednesday According to reports, General Reserved Engineering Force, GREF (Border Roads Organization), trucks carrying more then 45 labourers most of them were women coming back from their work from Nemo Village collided with roadside wall and fell down almost 30 metres down in the stream near Ladakh Scout regimental centre at Phyang, 15 kilometres away from Leh.

Jharkhand Home Minister escapes landmine attack (Go To Top)

    Ranchi: Ranchi Police have detected a landmine near the site of a football match where Sudesh Mahto, Home Minister of Jharkhand was the chief guest. The match was scheduled to be played at the Rangamati playground on Wednesday afternoon.The landmine was discovered at 11 a.m., just three hours before the match. Mahto is the second Jharkhand minister to have escaped extremists attack. In September last year Rural Development and Transport Minister Enos Ekka had claimed he was the target when a couple of personnel of his escort party suffered wounds when a bomb went off in Simdega.

Body found dumped near Union Minister's residence (Go To Top)

    New Delhi: The body of a fair complexioned, well- dressed 26-year old man was found near the Union Tourism Minister Renuka Chowdhury's official residence on Thursday morning. Police sources said that the body was found lying in the back lane of Union Tourism Minister Renuka Chowdhury's official residence at 76, Lodhi Estate here. The body had a bullet wound on the left side below the chest. "The incident has happened elsewhere and the body was thrown here later," the sources said. The age of man would be about 26 years, had fair complexion and was well-dressed when the body was found, sources said. The youth appears to be a professional working late hours in the night. The body had been sent for post-mortem and the investigations were on, said the police official of Tughlaq Road police station.

Four Naga militants killed in Manipur (Go To Top)

    Imphal: Four members of National Socialist Council of Nagaland - Khaplang faction (NSCN-K) were killed in an encounter with Central Paramilitary Forces at Kalapahar area in Senapati district of Manipur, late last night. According to the officials, the incident took place when personnel of 14th Assam Rifles who were spread in a hilly area near Kalapahar, about 30 km from here, started their search operation for the militants. In the final stage of the search operation, the militants started firing on personnel. In the gun-battle, four Naga militants were killed. Security forces recovered arms including AK-47 rifles from the militants. The bodies of militants were sent to the Regional Institute of Medical Science Hospital for post mortem. Reports from the district said, the Assam Rifles personnel are continuing with the search operation to locate other members of NSCN-K, who reportedly ran away.

Raped South African model identifies her attackers (Go To Top)

     Mumbai: The South African NRI model who was raped for two days last week, identified the two accused in an identification parade conducted by the Mumbai Police here on Thursday. The accused, Suresh Krishnani and Sunil Morpani, whom a local court has remanded to judicial custody till January six, were identified in the identification parade conducted by the police after securing their judicial remand. The police also questioned owner of the three-star Bawa International hotel where the victim was allegedly raped on December 28 and 29. Police sources said that samples of fingerprints from the hotel room and the car in which the accused had allegedly took the victim to an unknown place and raped her, had been taken for test. The South Africa model had filed an FIR (First Information Report) complaining that she was drugged in a suburban pub and raped by two youths over two days, last Wednesday and Thursday. The 27-year-old model alleged in her FIR that on December 27, she had gone to meet the owner of the Bawa International hotel, Govind Singh Bawa, near Santa Cruz domestic airport at around 10 p.m. (IST) on his invitation. After meeting Bawa, she went to Avalon pub in the same hotel where she spent half-an-hour. From there she returned to the hotel's restaurant and had drinks and ordered for dinner. While in midway through her dinner, she went to the toilet and after returning, she sipped her remaining drink and started feeling giddy. Acting on the complaint, the police on Saturday held the two suspects, Sunil Morpani and Suresh Krishnani, and conducted the identification parade today to verify the suspects.

Sharon suffers massive stroke (Go To Top)

    Tel Aviv: Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has suffered a massive stroke and has been rushed into surgery. Sharon, 77, was unconscious and has experienced cerebral bleeding. "The PM is undergoing surgery but is in a stable condition. When the operation ends, we will issue a comprehensive statement about his condition. Until then I suggest we don't engage in speculation," said Rannan Gissin, Sharon's aide. Sharon was at his Sycamore ranch when he complained about feeling unwell and was rushed to the hospital. This is Sharon's second stroke in just over two weeks. He was scheduled to undergo angioplasty at the same hospital on Thursday to block a hole in his heart, discovered during the stroke he suffered last month. Sharon's deputy Ehud Olmert has assumed the Prime Minister's responsibilities as a result of Sharon's illness.
