85 Muslim couples tie the knot in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: In a mass marriage ceremony, eighty-five Muslim couples tied the knot in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Organised by Faizale Rabbi Mass Marriage Community, the couples were also given necessary items like cupboards, utensils, table and chairs, required to set up a home. Salma, a bride, said she was thankful to the organisers as such mass marriages prove a boon to the poor families who cannot afford their children's wedding. "Such mass marriages help the poor parents who cannot afford their children's marriage. We are really thankful to the organisers. Such marriages help people like us to start a family. They also provide such essential household items," she said. The organisers, however, felt that tying the young couples in legal binds helps them not only to start a family, but also helps in preventing the spread of diseases like HIV/AIDS. Nizam Khan, a worker with the organisation, said it was a praiseworthy step towards the society. "It's a very good step towards the society. Mass marriages began with 10 marriages and this time 85 couples are getting married," Khan said. Mass marriages are becoming very popular especially among the economically underprivileged, as it eases huge expenses for the marriage ceremony. Usually, the family of a bride has to incur all the expenses of wedding and also give gifts to the bride and the groom, making it a lavish wedding, which generally remains a distant dream for poor and orphans.
