Clinch Series 4-3 (Go
To Top) VIJAYAWADA: Man-of-the-match Marlon Samuel's 75-ball unbeaten 108 runs helped West Indies crush India by 135 runs in the seventh and final one-day international here on Sunday, November 24, to clinch the series 4-3. After having won the toss in the decider, India's stand-in captain-cum-wicket keeper Rahul Dravid put in the visitors to bat. Despite a poor start, the Windies put on a formidable 315 for six on board in their allotted 50 overs, thanks to Samuel, Ramnaresh Sarwan (83) and opener Wavell Hinds (58). In reply, the hosts never got going and were all out for 180 in 36.5 overs. Only Yuvraj Singh offered some kind of a resistance, making 68. For the Windies, Jermaine Lawson was the pick of bowlers with figures of four for 56. The man-of-the-series award went to Windies opener Chris Gayle, who hit three brilliant centuries during the series coupled with a few wickets. Honours
Even as India Wins Sixth ODI (Go
To Top) JODHPUR: India managed to register a vital three-wicket victory against West Indies at this historic and strategically important town on Thursday, November 21, to level the series at 3-3 in the seven-match ODI tournament but not before making heavy weather of a modest target of 202. Rahul Dravid, leading the team in the absence of Saurav Ganguly who is nursing a back injury, top-scored with 58. The final tie at Vijayawada on Sunday will be the decider. India first dismissed West Indies for a paltry 201 runs in 46.3 overs on a sluggish pitch but, in the course of their own innings, lost three wickets for one run at one stage before reaching 202 for seven with 3.4 overs to spare. It was, however, Sanjay Bangar, No. 8 batsman, who made 32 off 38 balls to take India to a safe coast from a precarious 148 for six. Dravid hit his 42nd one-day fifty and shared in a 99-run fourth-wicket partnership with left-hander Yuvraj Singh, who contributed a substantial 54, after India slumped to 48 for three. Earlier, left-arm spinner Murali Kartik grabbed three crucial wickets for 36 runs and paceman Ajit Agarkar chipped in with three for 24 as West Indies were bowled out for 201. Shivnarine Chanderpaul's individual 58 helped the tourists to cross 200-mark. Speed
Rules Out Early Solution (Go
To Top) NEW DELHI: International Cricket Council (ICC) chief Malcom Speed said on Wednesday that there was no immediate solution to the sponsorship deadlock. Players from major cricketing teams particularly India have refused to sign ICC's participation contract saying it is in conflict with their own personal sponsorship obligations. Speed met the Indian cricket board officials and many sponsors in New Delhi to find a solution to the issue which could lead to a major player boycott of the February-March World Cup in South Africa. Speaking to reporters, Speed said the ICC fully understood the sponsorship obligations of Indian players but added that considering the number of sponsors and players involved, there would not be a quick solution. "What has become apparent is that the Indian players are more affected by the sponsorship issue than those in other countries. There are issues with players from other countries but there are more Indian players involved. I think we understand fully now what the position is with the contracts and which players are involved. We have spoken to the sponsors about the contracts. We are moving forward. As we said before this is not an easy issue. "There is not going to be a quick solution but ultimately we believe, there will be a solution," he said. Speed added that the national boards of all 14 World Cup teams had signed the agreement and were obliged to field their best players, but ICC was keen on talks to avoid any confrontation. Jagmohan Dalmiya, president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said the entire process was administrative and complex and would be resolved only after a series of meetings. A major row over the conflicting rights of the official sponsors and the players' personal sponsors had threatened the prestigious Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka in September. Players from several test countries refused to sign the participation contract disputing its player terms before most of them, barring the Indian players, agreed to sign up. The row almost led to a boycott of the 12-team event by leading Indian players like Sachin Tendulkar and skipper Saurav Ganguly before the ICC relaxed some of the conditions at the last minute to resolve the issue. The ICC had then relaxed its key clause barring advertisements of players by companies having conflicting business interests with official sponsors one month either side of the event. Players from most of the test playing countries are still unhappy over the stringent rules drawn up two years ago. The player terms, which will apply for all ICC events until 2007, were drawn up following a deal with the ruling body's marketing partner Global Cricket Corporation (GCC) worth 550 million dollars. May Prove Sunita Rani Innocent (Go
To Top) NEW DELHI: Middle distance runner Sunita Rani's fight to prove her innocence in the dope controversy has received a major boost after "huge discrepancies" were found in the reports on the banned substance, nandrolone, in her 'A' and 'B' samples tested after the 1500-meter race during the Asian Games in Busan. However, this provoked no comments from officials of Amateur Athletic Federation of India, but the 22-year-old athlete from Sangrur has reason to feel vindicated. She was stripped of her gold and bronze medals after she tested positive for nandrolone during the Busan Asian Games. But Sunita all along denied having taken any performance-enhancing drugs. The result of the 'A' sample shows nandrolone at 21 nanograms per millilitre whereas in the 'B' sample it is only six, according to the news report. The difference is quite unusual. The Amateur Athletic Federation of India, which has constituted a one-man Sushil Salwan enquiry committee to probe the doping scandal, will, however, wait for its report before deciding its future course of action. He was suffering from kidney problems and leaves behind his wife and a son. Singh, an ace right-winger, represented the country in two Olympics with the first being Rome in 1960, which saw India win the silver medal in hockey. He was also a member of the team which claimed a silver in the 1962 Asiad in Jakarta. But Tokyo gave him the crowning glory in an international career spanning from 1955 to 1967. Singh played for and coached erstwhile Bengal Nagpur Railway for more than 20 years till his retirement from South Eastern Railway. Sehwag's
Double (Go
To Top) SAMRALA (Punjab): A man in Punjab is the talk of the town as he is a look-alike of budding cricketer Virendra Sehwag. Jeevan Sharma was probably the next-door neighbour till the day he realised that he is an exact replica of Virendra Sehwag, who represents the new aggression in Indian cricket. A modest 25-year-old factory worker, Sharma was taken aback when cricket crazy fans mobbed him for autographs at a local restaurant. What ticked off as an occasional mistake started happening time and again. He blushes while narrating his experiences with Sehwag's cricket fans. "Whenever people see they look at me in surprise and address me as Sehwag (Virendra Sehwag). It feels so good that they treat me as if I am real Sehwag. Whenever Sehwag is playing and he is bowled out early, they come and complain to me saying that you did not score much runs today. So it feels that I am the actual Sehwag, it feels great," said Sharma. Sharma claims that his first love is body-building. Sachin Out

To Top) KOLKATA: A hamstring injury has forced batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar out of the forthcoming seven-match one-day series against the West Indies, beginning November 6. According to Jagmohan Dalmiya, president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Tendulkar, who pulled his hamstring during his marathon 176 on the final day of the third and final Test match here on Sunday, November 3, will undergo treatment for three weeks. "We received a report from the team physio Andrew Leipus who says the injury is not too severe but he needs rest to prevent further damage and rehabilitate the muscle," Dalmiya told reporters. Tendulkar will be replaced by left-hander Dinesh Mongia in the 14-man squad. Draw
at Eden (Go
To Top) KOLKATA: With 471 for eight on the last day of the Third and Final Test match against the West Indies at Eden Gardens on Sunday, India opted to bat on till the end rather than make a declaration and perforce the umpires had to declare the match a draw. The draw deprived India of a clean sweep. There was not much time left for the visitors to resume play. The West Indies had hopes of a victory when they took a 139-run first innings lead and reduced India to 87 for four on the fourth day. But Tendulkar for his 176 faced 299 balls in his seven-hour knock studded with 26 fours, strained his hamstring and has been ruled out of the one-day series starting Wednesday. Laxman's second century against West Indies followed his record 281 at the Eden Ground last year, which lifted India to a series-levelling win over Australia after they had followed-on. Sachin Tendulkar was declared man of the match, while man of the series award went to Harbhajan Singh. Anand
Enters Corsica Open Semi-final (Go
To Top) NEW DELHI: Defending champion Viswanathan Anand came a step closer to claim his third-in-a-row Corsica open title when he defeated Arthur Yusupov of Germany to enter the last four stage of the tournament being held in Bastia, France. Anand, who successfully defended his World Cup title in Hyderabad recently, won 1.5-.5 in the two-mini-match to move into the semi-finals, according to information received here. Anand, the two-time World Cup winner and former FIDE world champion, used his black pieces to perfection to beat Yusupov in the second game after both the players were forced to split points on the opening board. The first game, which was a French defence with Winawer variation, saw Anand with white pieces trying hard to force a result. But once Yusupov captured his advanced pawn, the players agreed to a draw after 53 moves. In the final game, Yusupov opted for the Queen's pawn opening. On the 27th move Anand got back the pawn he had given earlier and then the queens were exchanged on the 29th move. Soon after Anand slowly gained advantage and won space by winning a pawn and then extended his advantage into a winning position. Unable to force his way back into the game, the German surrendered after 59 moves. Kapil
