Rain, lightning claim several lives

     New Delhi: Unprecedented rain lashed several parts of the country damaging crops and killing several people. Rain killed 39 persons in Madhya Pradesh (MP), 27 in Maharashtra and 5 in Rajasthan. Among these, MP is the worst affected area. Rain this March broke a 70-year record with about 4.5 cm of rain recorded overnight. In the same month but in the year 1936, the figure was recorded as 3.5 cm. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre Director D P Dubey this weather condition was due to wind circulation in the upper atmosphere near Kutch. ''The weather might begin clearing from tomorrow. Hail may lash Sagar, Satna and Rewa tomorrow and later the circulation will enter Uttar Pradesh,'' he added.

    In Maharashtra, rains accompanied with hailstorms, lightning and thunder claimed 27 lives and brought untold disaster across the fields in central and western parts of the State. In central Maharashtra's in the region of Marathwada, a total of 14 people fell prey to the rains and13 lost lives in the western region of Vidarbha, according to the police and official sources. Many people died due to the lightning that accompanied rains. Besides, crops worth crores have been damaged, Deputy Divisional Commissioner (revenue) Dileep Shinde said at Aurangabad. With no sign of letting up, hailstorm and rain continued to lash Rajasthan for the third day today. Many electric poles were also damaged and in one incident killed a person who was hit by a falling electric pole in Baran district. Four such similar cases have been reported over the last two days. Rain also lashed the national capital giving a fall to the rising temperature. Fresh spell of rain sent the mercury plummeting to 22.5 Degree Celsius, the lowest in the last over a month. About 1.2 mm of rainfall was recorded in the capital, the meteorological department reported. Even in Uttar Pradesh light rainfall brought the temperature down. According to the state meteorological office Lucknow recorded a maximum temperature of 20.8 degrees Celsius, bringing it to 10 degrees below normal.
