When rafters had fun on Satluj waters

      Shimla: For once the turbulent waters of river Sutlej turned into a battle ground for many visitors from across the globe, who came to participate in the third annual 'Air India Cup 2006' International Rafting Championship held here recently. Organised by the Indian Rafting Foundation and Himachal Pradesh Tourism Department, the competition was held from March 15 to 18 at Pandua, 80 kilometres away from Shimla. The knock-out race had three categories--'Raft Sprint', Raft Salem and the daredevil Raft Downriver--of the annual rafting competition.

     According to the organiser, the event was aimed at creating awareness among the youth to adopt the skill of water rafting and promoting the adventure tourism in the State. "The event, per se 'Air India Cup' is concerned is a very important event for the International Rafting Federation. It is the only event, which is based in India under the aegis and concurrence of International Rafting Federation," said Shaukat Sikand, Organising Secretary, Indian Rafting Foundation. "We wanted to create awareness among youth of the country and also to bring in tourism through such events. River rafting is popular all over the world and Himachal Pradesh which is coming up with adventure tourism, get good response because the river Satluj is considered as one of the best rivers in India today," said Sikand. Around 30 rafters, who participated in the competition, were excited to showcase their daredevil performance with their world- class counterparts. "This competition is very interesting. India is a very good country and we enjoy participating in this competition," said Anton Maymanov, a Russian rafter. For some the competition was an special occasion and a joy to be with an international players. "It is very exciting and competitive event because we are participating with an international team. It is wonderful to be here," Herzen Zenek of Czech Republic.
