ITBP expedition to Mt Everest flagged off New
Delhi: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil today flagged off the third
mountaineering expedition of the Indo- Tibetan Border Police to Mt. Everest.
The ITBP team, comprising 28 members and led by Additional Deputy Inspector
General Harbhajan Singh, would attempt the world's highest peak though
North face (from Tibet) which is considered the most difficult and technically
challenging route. Wishing the team members luck after flagging off the
expedition, Patil said, "We should have more of such expeditions and we
are happy that paramilitary forces are paying enough attention to this
aspect. The Government of India would help in every respect to send more
expeditions to these mountains." Addressing the team members, Director
General of ITBP, V K Joshi expressed the hope that the team would make
the nation proud. The team has 26 ITBP personnel, one Central Reserve
Police Force (CRPF) and one from the Intelligence Bureau. There is also
a lady officer in the team. The ITBP has carried out successful expeditions
to Everest in 1992 and 1996. The Central Para Military force has so far
scaled 150 Himalayan peaks. In recognition of the services rendered by
ITBP in the field of mountaineering, its five mountaineers have been awarded
Padma Shri and six others have been recognised with Tenzing Norgey National
Adventure Award.
