                         Jammu-Srinagar highway blocked in
                          rain
                                  Srinagar:
The Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed for
the eighth consecutive day on Sunday as landslides and
shooting stones continued to play havoc. The highway
is badly affected with incessant rains, forcing the
traffic movement one-way occasionally, as a precautionary
measure to avoid accidents. Around 6000 passengers along
with a 1000 vehicles, including trucks loaded with essential
commodities, are stranded on the highway after it was
closed last Sunday, due to heavy rains. Border Roads
Organisation (BRO) and local authorities are working
hard to make the 300-km-long highway fully motorable
as soon as possible, officials said. More than 2000
people have been provided with relief by the Divisional
Administration, Jammu , and the State Road Transport
Corporation (SRTC), in the past two weeks SRTC buses
were operated with passengers stranded at Jammu since
March 10 up to Penthal. These passengers crossed Penthal
on foot to board vehicles on the other side for Srinagar
as there was no other alternative.
