Mountaineering expedition to Mamostong Kangri

     New Delhi: A mountaineering expedition to Mount Mamostong Kangri, a 7516m high formidable peak in Karakoram range was flagged off by Lt Gen AKS Chandele, VSM, DG EME and Senior Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers from Directorate General of EME Headquarters at Delhi. A team comprising of 25 members led by Maj Vishal Ahlawat will dare the challenging climb. Maj Vishal Ahlawat a die hard adventurist and an experienced mountaineer of the Corps of EME has eight summits to his credit in a short span of 10 yrs of service. Corps of EME has an old association with the sport of mountaineering. The first All Army Mountaineering Expedition in 1962 which sumitted Koktong peak (6755M) was financed by EME Dte only. The Corps also has produced Padma Bhushan Major HPS Ahluwalia (Retd) the first Army climber of Mt Everest. Mt Mamostong Kangri (7516m) is located in Karakoram range on the ridge separating the Chong Kumdan glacier in the north and Thangman glacier in the south. It is one of the most dominating and formidable peaks which is always a challenge for all mountaineers. The climb to the peak is expected to commence on 31 Jul 09. Speaking on the occasion, Lt Gen Chandele, stated that the Corps of EME has been an omnipresent key player in Indian Army's panorama. Primarily entrusted with the task of repairing and maintaining the vehicles and equipment of the Army the Corps has a rich heritage of world class sportsmen. Starting with Padma Bhushan Major HPS Ahluwalia (Retd) in mountaineering, 'Flying Sikh' Padma Shri Milkha Singh in athletics, Subedar Tirlok Singh in football and recently , Subedar Major Rajesh Choudhary, VSM in sailing and Arjuna Awardee Sub K Jenil Krishan in rowing are a few iconic sportsmen produced by the Corps.
