Heavy
rain cripples Mumbai, as city prepares to face high tide Mumbai:
Life in Mumbai has been crippled again due to heavy rain and the city is preparing
itself to face high tides from the Arabian Sea. Met department communiqués said
that Mumabi has received 40 mm rain till 8.39 in the morning. It has also predicted
heavy rain in the next 24 hours. According to Brihan Mumbai Muncipal Corporation
(BMC) officials, heavy downpour has led to water logging in lower parts of the
city and the suburbs. Air, road and rail traffic has been affected by the heavy
rain. The BMC has put its staff on alert to counter the effects of high tide.
The met department has warned that Mumbai might see a high tide of nearly five
metres to day or on Friday. The BMC has also requested the education department
to declare a holiday in educational institutions to avoid panic. The Municipal
Corporation has asked locals to stay away from beaches. A comprehensive disaster
management plan has been prepared to meet the likely flood situation. The Maharashtra
Government has chalked out an extensive plan for the Thane and Raigad districts
besides Mumbai to face the situation arising from the heavy rains. Maharashtra
Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, held a series of meetings with the officials to determine
the best way forward in dealing with the monsoon.
