Rakhis
flood markets in Rajkot Rajkot:
Markets in Rajkot city of Gujarat are flooded with different kinds of Rakhis.
Raksha Bandhan is a festival of Hindus, which celebrates the relationship between
brothers and sisters on the full moon of month of Shravana, which is marked by
tying of rakhi or holy thread on wrist of brothers, gift and sweets are also exchanged.
This year, the festival falls on August 5. As for the Rakhis on view in the markets
of Rajkot, one can spot varieties numbering over hundreds. However the most popular
Rakhi of this season is the ZooZoo Rakhi. The ZooZoo themed Rakhi is based on
the popular mobile company's ZooZoo advertisement, which was very popular during
the IPL cricket tournament in South Africa. "This time besides the traditional
Rakhis we have got ZooZoo Rakhis which became popular after a television advertisement.
I have bought this Rakhi for my brother because he really liked this character
when this advertisement appeared on television," said Monika, a resident. Yusuf
Makda, a dealer in Rakhis said that these symbolic threads were not only brought
from various parts of India but also imported from other countries. "This year
Rakhis made of sandal wood, American diamonds and Austrian crystals are popular.
Besides Chinese and Korean Rakhis made of beads are also in demand. Then Rakhis
with sweets are also popular," he added. The festivals origin dates back several
centuries to the time when an upper caste Hindu queen Rani Roopmati, in times
of war, sent a thread to Mughal ruler Humayun, requesting protection from the
enemy. King Humayun accepted the thread and honoured her request. Since then,
the tradition continues in most of the families. -July
