Jammu
aims to go green by promoting cycle rickshaw by
Rajan Kour Jammu:
Alarmingly high pollution levels in the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir has
prompted the administration and environment experts to promote the use of cycle
rickshaws as a mode of transport. Jammu is trying to go green traffic wise. The
introduction of cycle rickshaws is seen as a promising development from the business
point of view. The "Go Green" cycle rickshaws have not only helped to reduce pollution
in the city, but are unique eyecatchers in the traffic scenario. "The response
to this new mode of transport has been very positive. We earn good money and are
happy to see people enjoy the ride which is considerably cheap," said cycle rickshaw
driver Raj Kumar. Introduced a few days ago, Jammu presently has a fleet of 40
"Go Green" cycle rickshaws, and there are plans to add more. Mayank Goswami, who
has been instrumental in convincing residents of Jammu to ride in cycle rickshaws
supporting the logo," Go Green," said: "I was much concerned about global warming
issues and thought that such a step would make a difference in keeping a check
on the increasing pollution levels in Jammu." "It is a cheap mode of transport
which will definitely help in controlling the increasing menace of pollution in
Jammu, added regular rickshaw commuter Kulbhushan Atri. Archana Gupta , a housewife,
who uses a rickshaw to pick up her son from school is visibly contented. "We are
benefitting. We reach home conveniently which earlier was tiresome. The pollution
too would be in check," she said. The rickshaw business promises to provide employment
opportunities to many youth in the region. -July
