worth millions seized at India-Pakistan border Taran
Taran (Punjab): Four packets of heroin worth 200 million rupees seized at
the India-Pakistan international border in Taran Taran region of Punjab. Seized
by the officials at Khem Karan sector the heroin was buried just off the international
India Pakistan frontier. "On the basis of a tip off, we came to know that some
amount of heroin has been buried across the fence of international border by Pakistani
smugglers so as to smuggle it to India through Punjab," said Surinder Pal Singh
Parmar, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Tarn Taran, Punjab. The SSP further
informed that police have registered an FIR under the NDP Act. He also said that
the cost value of seized heroin is estimated to be in the range of 200 million
rupees in the international market. India is viewed as a major transit point for
drug smuggling to the West. Heroin is derived from morphine, a naturally occurring
substance extracted from the seedpod of the Asian poppy plant, and appears as
a white or brown powder. -Jun
