Seven more Jalandhar students have swine flu

     New Delhi: Seven more students from Jalandhar who returned after an educational tour of the US tested positive for swine flu on Monday. One student was found infected on Sunday at the Delhi airport when the team of 30 students of Guru Amar Dass Public School, Jalandhar, arrived from their NASA study. Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has advised students to defer overseas travel for a couple of months till the pandemic is brought under control globally. With these, 30 cases of swine flu have been confirmed in India.      

     A 29-year old woman and her three-year old child in Bangalore and a teenager in Jalandhar tested positive for H1N1 virus on Sunday, taking the overall swine flu cases in the country to 20. The mother-child duo had arrived at the Bangaluru airport from New Jersey on 12th June, they were quarantined at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases in Bangalore after having tested positive for swine flu, Director of Health and Family Welfare Services Usha Vasunkar said. In the second case of Jalandhar, a student of Guru Amar Dass Public School has tested positive for swine flu and has been admitted to hospital in New Delhi, Civil Surgeon Dr S S Wali said. "A 30-member group of students had gone to an educational trip to the US and when they came back yesterday, one of the students was found at the Delhi Airport having symptoms of swine flu. He accordingly was put to tests that found him positive," Dr Wali said.

     Earlier, in Hyderabad, two more people were tested positive. A six-year old girl from Hyderabad and her one-and-a-half-year-old brother, who recently arrived from New York, were tested positive at NIV, Pune. However, nine of the 17 cases of Influenza A [H1N1] reported so far in India have been cured and discharged. Others are stable and admitted to the identified health facility. Besides, Indian scientists are likely to develop a vaccine for the dreaded swine flu within the next four to six months. The Health Ministry has identified the Serum Institute of India, Bharat Biotech and Panacea Biotech, to work on the vaccine. On Friday, a request was sent to the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the seed of the virus.

      In Chennai, a family of five was quarantined for swine flu symptoms on Saturday. The Coimabatore-based family, including a six-month-old girl, arrived from the US on Saturday. Airport officials said that Muralitharan, wife Sarika and their three daughters were found to be suffering from cough, cold and fever, after a special medical team stationed at the airport examined them. They were sent to Communicable Diseases Hospital at Tondiarpet for further medical attention.

     On Thursday, three people reported with swine flu symptoms in Mumbai and were quarantined. They are Indian nationals hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala and they travelled from Jeddah to Mumbai via Riyadh and after arriving in Mumbai. They were sent from the airport screening to Kasturba Hospital.
