Punjab beats the heat with ice candies and yogurt shakes

Amritsar: With most of northern India reeling from the intense heat wave, residents in Punjab are fighting nature's fury with traditional drinks and beverages. "Lassi" has been an instant hit among residents who prefer it over aerated soft drinks marketed by multinational companies. "Heat has been intensifying. We are taking "Lassi" to cool ourselves. It gives energy and cannot be compared with cold drinks. It is also good for health," said Balbir Singh, a customer. "Lassi" has so far maintained its niche in the market despite the presence of soft drinks like Pepsi and Coke and is also affordable by all. Apart from "Lassi", ice candies, popular among youngsters, is also making a steady business. "Temperature in Amritsar is 43 degree Celsius. We prefer ice candies and "Lassi" to beat the heat," said Dimple, another customer. The scorching sun aggravated the heat in Punjab as temperature in Amritsar was recorded at around 43.6 degree Celsius. Doctors are advising people to take lot of waters, but to stay away from carbonated soft drinks. "We advise people to drink lot of water and also add a pinch of salt to it. Even lemon juice is good and people should avoid soft drinks as they contain sugar and are not good for health," H.P. Singh, a cardiologist.
