Badrinath shrine opens on May 13 Dehradun:
The Badrinath shrine in the Himalayas will reopen on May 13 for
pilgrimage after winter. The shrine is believed to be one of the four
most important pilgrimage centres in India, the other three being Puri,
Rameshwaram and Dwarka. Dedicated to the Lord Vishnu, Badrinath is situated
at a height of approximately 3,133 metres in Chamoli district in the
Indo- Tibet Himalayan border region. The shrine remains closed during
the winter for nearly five months as the heavy snowfall makes the area
inaccessible for pilgrims. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims throng
this shrine every year to pray and worship. Pandharpur: Pilgrims head for Maharashtra shrine Trimbekeshwar
(Maharashtra): Thousands of devotees began their pilgrimage to the
famous Pandharpur shrine in Maharashtra on Saturday. The one-and-a-half
month long pilgrimage began from the holy Trimbekeshwar town, about
50 kilometres from main city Nasik, with devotees offering prayers at
Nivritinath, the mausoleum of elder brother of a mystic saint Jnaneshvar.
Jnaneshvar, whose teachings were non-dualist, was a great mystic and
poetic genius of the state, who died at the age of 21 while in a state
of ecstasy. Pilgrims would undertake a three-day stay at the shrine
during which they will perform various rituals. Trimbekeshwar located
on the banks of the River Godavari also plays host to a pitcher festival
once every four years. |
