Premchand's
house in a dilapidated condition
Lamahi
(Varanasi): The home of Munshi Premchand, one
of the most outstanding literary figures of the 20th
century, lies in a dilapidated condition. A native
of Lamahi village near Varanasi, Premchand was one
of the most renowned authors of his time. However,
with no support from the provincial or the federal
authorities, Premchand's abode lies in a ruined state.
Atul Rai, grandson of Premchand demanded more sensitiveness
from the authorities said that the family is ill-informed
about the steps taken by the government related to
the author. "The authorities keep announcing new schemes
like naming some particular road in his name. But
we are never asked or told anything. Either you acquire
the house or do something about it. But we are never
taken into confidence," said Rai. A pioneer in Hindi
and Urdu fiction Premchand's novels and short stories
dwelt on the lives of everyday heroes. Premchand's
work ranges from humorous and ironic to somber and
heart-rending in his depiction of the multifarious
realities of his time. On the occasion of 68th death
aniversary of the author, several known figures from
the written world paid tributes to him. "Those of
a progressive mindset have always been discussing
about Premchand. We have and can never forget him. There
are people who say Premchand was a follower of Nazism
and anti-dalits. We want to prove all this wrong,"
said Roop Rekha Verma, former Vice- Chancellor of
Lucknow University.
