Kangra temples: The legend behind Jwalamukhi

The temples in and around Kangra in Himachal are Baijnath, Jwalamukhi, Chamunda Devi, Mahakal, Bajreshwari, Nainadevi and Chintpurni

It was at Jwalamukhi that, as the legend says, Adishakti, known as Sati or Parvati, was born out of flames when the trinity prayed to the superpower for help. She grew up in the house of Prajapathi Daksha and later became the consort of Lord Shiva. Pandavas built the first temple here. Ashtabhuja temple, one km away, is an ancient place of worship. Chaumukha, 22 km, is a Shiva temple with a four-faced image.

Panj Teerth and Mahakaleshwar, 9 km, are two sacred places situated on the banks of the Beas.

Baijnath, 15 km away from Palamur, has a temple where Shiva is worshipped as Vaidyanath, the lord of physicians. It is a famous pilgrim centre. Ravana is said to have worshipped Shiva for immortality here.
