Adoption fair in Mumbai to promote fostering of children

Mumbai: A voluntary organisation held a gathering of adopted children and their parents in Mumbai on Saturday to spread the message of adoption. Indian Association for the Promotion of Adoption and Child Welfare (IAPA) encourages couples, who cannot have biological offspring to go for adoption. IAPA provides care for children separated from their families and promotes the idea of fostering. "It is a get together programme for adoptive parents. We also call parents who are planning to adopt so that they get a chance to meet those who have already taken the step. It gives them a little more courage so that they can seriously think of taking the step," said Ashraf Macchiwala, the president of IAPA. Zahir Mirza, a parent of adopted children said it was a purely heart-felt decision to adopt her kids. "It is a conscious decision. It is a voluntary adoption. We could have our own children. We decided to adopt as soon as we got married. Five years ago we adopted a girl child and last year we adopted our second daughter. Now our family is complete," said Mirza. As per the law, only Indian bodies, which are duly recognised and listed with the government, can facilitate adoption by Indians as well as foreigners.
