Jadeja Stopped from Playing League Match (Go To Top) NEW DELHI: Former cricketer Ajay Jadeja, who recently got a reprieve from the five-year ban, was on Thursday stopped from playing a league match. Nearly five overs could be bowled before the match was abandoned by BCCI officials. Jadeja said the officials intervened and abandoned the match saying "they can't allow me to play any first class match." He was playing his first official game in over two years for National Stadium Cricket Club, a prominent team in the first-division league. "We started the game, but after about five to seven overs Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) officials arrived and said they would not let me play," he said. In December 2000 the BCCI had imposed a five-year ban on Jadeja following an inquiry into a Delhi police report which charged him with match-fixing alongwith Mohammad Azharuddin and a few other players. An arbitrator appointed by the High Court quashed the BCCI ban order on Monday saying the probe was "illegal". Following the arbitrator's order, the BCCI had said they would decide on the matter within three months as to whether they would challenge the court order. Two

To Top) NEW DELHI: Flamboyant all-rounder Ajay Jadeja is now free to play for India as the five-year ban imposed on him by the BCCI for his alleged involvement in match-fixing has been set aside. Jadeja had agreed to take the matter to arbitration after some hearing in the Delhi High Court. Justice JK Mehra, appointed as an arbitrator by the High Court, on Monday quashed the BCCI ban order making Jadeja eligible to play for India in the future. Jadeja had challenged the BCCI decision to ban him from playing cricket for India for five years after an inquiry commission headed by K Madhavan endorsed the CBI report indicating his involvement in the match-fixing controversy. However, after some hearing in the High Court, Jadeja agreed to take the matter to arbitration and the High Court appointed former Judge JK Mehra as an arbitrator, who quashed the BCCI order on Monday. To Top) SYDNEY: Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne has said he will retire from one-day cricket after the World Cup. This, he said, he will do in a bid to prolong his Test career. The 33-year-old Warne made the announcement while speaking to press persons here on Wednesday. Warne, who was named as one of Wisden's five cricketers of the century in 2000, is the second leading wicket-taker in one-day ties. With 491 Test wickets under his belt, he is rapidly chasing the world repord of 519 wickets presently held by West Indies former pace bowler Courtney Walsh. In the shorter version of the game he already has 288 wickets. For the past almost two years, Warne has been troubled by shoulder problems. He said the wear and tear of one-day cricket was finally taking its toll on his body. ICC Suspends
Lehmann over Racial Remarks (Go
To Top) SYDNEY: Australian batsman Darren Lehmann has been found guilty of breaching ICC code on racial vilification and banned from five limited-over matches. He made the offensive remarks during a one-dayer against Sri Lanka. ICC match referee Clive Lloyd fixed the charge against him at a three-hour hearing on Saturday. Lehmann will miss four or five remaining ties in the triangular one-day series against Sri Lanka and England, along with possibly Australia's opening match at the World Cup, starting next month in South Africa and Zimbabwe. He is the first international cricketer to be suspended on this kind of reason and his lawyer said he won't appeal. Lehmann reportedly referred to Sri Lankan players as "black" in a two-word obscenity shouted by him when entering the Australian dressing room after being marginally run out in a one-day game with Sri Lanka in Brisbane on Wednesday. But he offered verbal and written apologies to the Sri Lankans which were immediately accepted. Cricketers

Sachin Tendulkar too gave media a slip by leaving through another gate. Vice-captain Rahul Dravid, along with team-mates Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble, had got off at Bangalore earlier. However, all-rounder Sanjay Bangar told the waiting reporters that though things had not gone as planned in New Zealand, the players were in a positive state of mind and were looking forward to the World Cup in South Africa, beginning February 9. Retires from Professional Tennis (Go
To Top) SYDNEY: After much speculations about his professional future, the word is finally out. Patrick Rafter, two-time US Open champion and one of Australia's favourite tennis sons, announced his retirement from the sport on Friday. "I know it's been a while coming, but I am announcing my official retirement from professional tennis. As you can probably understand, it has been a very difficult decision for me to make, which is why it took me some time to be sure I was making the right decision," Rafter said in an open letter to the media. "After taking several months for my arm to recover from stress fracture injuries I sustained in late 2001, I wanted to make sure that besides gaining physical fitness, I still had the motivation to compete. If I couldn't commit to giving 100 per cent to the game, there would be no point in returning. By the end of 2002, the motivation just wasn't there and my decision was made," it read. "I will have regrets that the Wimbledon and Davis Cup trophies are not in my cupboard, but that's sport, you win some and you lose some. However, I feel I can leave the game, satisfied with my achievements, knowing that I gave it my all. I will certainly miss some aspects of the game in my retirement, but for now, I need to stay home and focus on the new developments in my life. I haven't made any decisions about my future yet, and I'm not in any hurry. Now that I've officially retired, I feel like my mind is free to make decisions beyond competing in the tennis arena," the letter added. Pak Soccer

Kabbadi is a 4,000 year-old-game originating in India wherein two teams compete with each other for higher scores, by touching or capturing the players of the opponents. Played largely in South Asia, Kabbadi is a competitive event in the Asian Games and vying for a status in the Olympics. The Kabbadi tournament in Ludhiana which concluded on Monday featured teams of expatriate Indians from America, Australia, Germany, Canada and India to name a few. Balraj Singh Baaz, a player from Toronto, was ecstatic over playing on his home soil. "I am feeling great here. It feels great to come back to your own country and play on the home ground. The game is very close to us. I am feeling great. I come here every year to play the match," said Baaz. The tournament was organised by Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) who left Punjab, where Kabbadi is a favourite sport. Inderjeet Mulapuri, chairman of the Sports Association of Canada which organised the event, said the tournament was conducted with a view to acquainting the younger generation abroad with Indian games and culture. Have Lost Their Confidence: Wright (Go

"The trouble is some of them have lost their touch and their confidence is gone with it. But we cannot afford to lose our focus any longer", Wright said. Indians have batted like novices in the present series, showing little clue against seaming and bouncing deliveries. "They have to concentrate very hard on playing down the wicket and bat through those 50 overs. This is where all my energy is engaged at the moment", Wright observed. "In these conditions, it's a test of your fighting character and determination to stay out there - it's not about scoring runs, it's staying at the wicket that matters", he added. Cricketers,
Mediapersons Play Football Match (Go

Today, to the delight of their fans, emminent personalities from both were seen playing an exhibition football match. Kapil Dev, Nikhil Chopra, Ajay Jadeja, Rajat Sharma, Rajdeep Sardesai and CEOs of some major companies were among those who participated in this match. The match was held in New Delhi to promote football and create an element of excitement about it amongst youngsters. Rajdeep Sardesai, senior television journalist said, "Over the years, interest of people in football has declined. Football lovers like us want to generate interest in this game. And if people see Kapil Dev, Jaspal Rana and some television actors playing the game, their liking towards the game will increase." "I want future generations to play football. This is a very good game. With just one ball, 22 people can play. This is also not an expensive or a difficult game. And if we try hard we can excell in any game", added Kapil Dev, legendary cricketer. For years now, especially in India, cricket has been the only game in limelight. It's probably during the Soccer World Cup and various tennis tournaments that there are takers for games like tennis, football, Rugby, etc. Hopefully, exhibition matches like these - and that too with eminent and popular personalities - can play an important role in promoting some good games besides cricket in India.
