KEDARNATH, May 24: A helicopter carrying six pilgrims made a crash-landing near the helipad in Kedarnath on Friday morning due to technical snag. All passengers were safe on landing. The chopper had taken off from the Sirsi helipad for Kedarnath at 7 am.

It is terrifying to see the helicopter in the video swirling and dropping nose down alternately. But that was autorotation. Autorotation is a technique resorted to by a pilot to try for a crash-landing when an engine failure or tail or rear rotor failure occurs, which is what happened in the present case. It is a common emergency procedure when there are no options but the risks are many. The pilot pulled it off.

Sirsi is the nearest helipad from Kedarnath town, 25 km away. It takes about 10 minutes to fly to the town. And the temple is situated 500 metres from the helipad, a 15-minute walk to the shrine. By road, one can travel up to Gaurikund from Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun. Gaurikund is the base camp. From Gaurikund to the shrine is 16 km trek, a steep ascent through the exhilarating Mandakini valley. There are dolis and other means for the needy. Heli services too are available from several points on the route.

Helicopter mishaps are very frequent in Uttarakhand, especially as the choppers are obsolete or the pilots, made to work beyond the prescribed limit, suffer from fatigue. During Char Dham season, choppers make around 400 sorties a day.

Three of the Char (four) Dham - Yamunotri, Gangotri and Kedarnath - opened on May 10 and Badrinath on May 12. They will close on Kartik Purnima on November 15 for winter break.

The Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand is one of the sacred pilgrimages for the Hindus. For the current season as many as 26 lakh devotees have already registered.
