Pune accident: Mother of minor driver arrested for swapping blood sample

Vishal Agarwal, the father of the accused minor, reportedly called Dr Ajay Taware 14 times for changing his son's blood sample to prove he was not drunk. It is reported that Agarwal gave Rs 3 lakh to the doctors for the job.

PUNE, June 1: The mother of the minor boy involved in the high-profile Pune Porsche accident that killed two techies in the wee hours of May 19 was on Saturday morning arrested for swapping her blood sample with his to prove that her son was not driving drunk.

Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar said investigation has revealed that the minor's blood sample was replaced with his mother Shivani's blood.

Dr Ajay Taware, the head of the State-run Sassoon Hospital's forensic medicine department, had come under scrutiny for his alleged involvement in manipulating the blood test for alcohol traces.

Vishal Agarwal, the father of the accused minor, reportedly called Dr Ajay Taware 14 times for changing his son's blood samples to prove he was not drunk. Dr Ajay Taware asked Dr Shrihari Halnor, chief medical officer, to switch the samples. Thereafter the blood was declared alcohol-free.

However, a DNA testing conducted at the instance of the police later did not match the Sassoon sample with the boy's father's blood and the swapping was confirmed. Dr Taware, Dr Halnor and a staff member, Atul Ghatkamble, were arrested.

A three-member committee was formed to investigate the blood test manipulation. An inquiry is also being done about the allegations of monetary rewards the doctors may have received in exchange. It is reported that Vishal Agarwal gave Rs 3 lakh to the doctors. Atul Ghatkamble acted as the middleman collecting Rs 3 lakh from the teen's family, to be paid to the doctors.

Driver forced to own up the accident: The 17-year-old is currently in an observation home. His father and grandfather, Surendra Agarwal, have also been arrested for allegedly kidnapping the family's driver Gangaram to prevent him from testifying that the boy was at the wheel. They wanted the driver to own up the accident and save their son which he refused. The driver had earlier told the police that the boy tried to forcibly take the key but when informed his father allowed the son to drive. He had also allowed him to go to a party and was aware his son was drinking.

Interestingly, the teen was granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) within 15 hours of the accident just on some ridiculous conditions like writing an essay about road safety and car accidents.

Vishal Agarwal is a well-connected, influential builder in Pune.

The family committed several crimes to conceal one crime.

What the MLA was doing in police station in the wee hours: Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and national president of Nationalist Congress Party Ajit Pawar defended party’s Vadgaon Sheri MLA Sunil Tingre, who allegedly tried to influence the case. Tingre had reached the Yerwada Police Station at 3.30 am immediately after the accident and was there until 6 am. A letter from Tingre recommending Dr Ajay Taware for appointment as the Medical Superintendent of the hospital has also emerged.

The 17-year-old's drunk driving had claimed the lives of two young computer engineers - Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta - who were employed in the city and hailed from Madhya Pradesh. Their bike was rammed from behind by an overspeeding Porsche driven by the teenager in the wee hours of May 19. It is alleged the boy had been to two pubs, spending Rs 48,000, prior to hitting the road.

TAILPIECE: Almost every other day we hear of shootings in one place or other in the country. India will very soon replace the US as the world's No 1 in the incidence of mass shooting. It will eclipse terrorism as a source of concern. Who can help? At least, has it occurred to anyone's mind?

It is not understood how undesirable elements are allowed to get so close to her and play havoc with the artwork. Several times over this has happened in the past, deranged minds masquerading as tourists and cultists venting their frustration.

A Spicejet passenger had a harrowing experience inside a tiny claustrophobic lavatory aboard a Mumbai-Bengaluru flight when he found to his bewilderment that the door was not opening.

Tailpiece: Sometimes appearing to outnumnber men and women on the streets, the stray dogs are turning more and more daring with sections of anti-social elements out there to feed and protect them in order to find a window for their unfulfilled love! There is an all-pervading feeling of lack of authority.

Ankit Tiwari had told the employee that “instructions had been received from the Prime Minister’s Office to conduct an enquiry” and reopen the “already disposed of” case and asked him to appear before the ED office at Madurai on October 30, DVAC said. The doctor was allegedly threatened with arrest and told to pay a bribe of Rs 3 cr to avoid the ED probe, which was later negotiated down to Rs 50 lakh.

Tailpiece: We are made to believe RBI, CBI, ED, Judiciary as sacrosanct and all others like railways, transport, revenue, education, PWD departments are composed of us the mortals, absolutely corrupt! As if in the sacrosanct places the angels descend from the heavens to work in the night and fly away before day-break! Let's be true to ourselves, we are all cut from the same cloth.

Betting through Dubai-based Mahadev Book in India is conducted through a countrywide network. Probes reveal that the online gambling is worth several millions and top politicians, officials and celebs have been beneficiaries.

TAILPIECE: Polling dates for some States are round the corner. Top politicians have begun their acrimonious debate who looted more, even as Mahadev is washing their dirty laundry in the open ghat. Come what may, one needs to seize power to amass "thy wretched pelf!" One simple question is, why else one should spend lakhs or crores to get elected! A question every Indian should ask to oneself at least once a day!

His inaction amounts to defeating the rights of the people of the State to welfare measures sought to be implemented through the Bills, the Kerala Government's petition submitted, while the State of Tamil Nadu remarked that its "Governor is acting as a political rival."

Tailpiece: Coming up back to back, the petitions in their totality seem to question the provision of Raj Bhavan, and not motives of a Governor as a person.

Shocking news from the UK: Leading grocers have started bribing policemen with free food and drinks to persuade them to take action against shoplifters.

Shoplifting has risen by about 27 per cent in 10 major cities across the UK this year. The cost of retail crime last year was $2.15 billion. Besides, “We are seeing organised gangs threatening staff with weapons and emptying stores," Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the British Retail Consortium, said. Data shows that the police failed to respond to 73 per cent of serious retail crimes that included assault and abuse of workers, apart from shoplifting.

"Let’s see how the (Governor's) Vice-Chancellors are given salary." Mamata's extreme statements will put the Marxist Government in Kerala, which is also facing similar issues, to shame. Has she begun the countdown for a war on the streets?

It's true Mamata has come to see a conspiracy to demolish the established systems across the country, but lacks the ability to foresee what exactly is being pushed.
