The forensic tests of the DNA samples have confirmed that the cut finger was of the ice cream factory worker who lost his finger in a machine accident during filling work. The blood test also dispelled the apprehensions of Yummo consumers about any infections.

MUMBAI, June 29: The part of a severed human finger found in an ice cream ordered by a Mumbai doctor was of a worker at a Pune factory where the ice cream was filled, it has been found in invetigations.

The Malad-based doctor, Orlem Brendan Ferrao, had ordered the Yummo brand ice cream online on June 12. He felt it was a nut or chocolate piece. He complained to the customer care of the Yummo ice cream but not satisfied with their reply, made a police complaint at the Malad police station.

He said, "As I got to the middle of the ice cream, suddenly I felt a big piece in there. Initially, I thought that it might be a big nut. Luckily, I didn't consume it. However, after looking at it up close, I saw a nail over it".

The police later found in investigation that an employee of the Fortune Dairy factory in Pune that fills the ice cream, Omkar Pote ( 24), had lost the tip of his finger in a machine accident while filling ice cream cones on May 11.

They collected the DNA and blood samples of the worker and sent them to the forensic science laboratory to match with the finger. The report confirmed that it was part of the worker's finger. And the blood report stated that he did not suffer from any infectious diseases which otherwise would have affected those unknown people who consumed the ice cream of the same batch and machine.

The police said on Thursday they are prosecuting the employee and the factory supervisors for “negligence” as they allowed the contaminated ice cream batch to be despatched for sale.

"The finger found in the ice cream was sent for the DNA test. The suspect's (Company's Assistant Operator Manager) DNA was also sent for the DNA test. Both the DNA samples matched. Now, we are investigating whose negligence it was in this matter... A case under sections 272, 273, and 336 of the IPC has been registered. Further investigation is underway," Senior Police Inspector of Malad PS, Ravi Adane told ANI.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the manufacturer's licence.
