2 Indians killed in Iran's attack on UAE tankers; Gulf war resumes: Oil price up
TANKER ON FIRE: Ignoring Iran's repeated warnings, UAE tankers 'Mombasa' and 'Al Bahiyah' taking a southern route at Strait of Hormuz—Iran says it does not approve of—and getting struck by IRGC's cruise missiles.
DUBAI, Jul 14: Tensions in West Asia reached a dangerous new threshold
on Tuesday after Iranian cruise missiles struck two UAE-flagged oil tankers
in southern Strait of Hormuz in Oman's territorial waters on Tuesday morning
killing two Indians and injuring eight others—six of them Indians.
Iran's IRGC has claimed responsibility for the attacks on the two "offending
supertankers." It said the vessels ignored repeated warnings against attempting
to use a route "not approved by Iran." The IRGC also warned the Hormuz route
is extensively mined.

Iran resumed attacks on commercial vessels in Strait of Hormuz and US bases
in the Gulf countries even as the processions and funeral of Iran's the late
Supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei was getting over by last Friday. So also the
US.
UAE's Ministry of Defence has confirmed the strikes on its ships.
According to the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defence, the twin missile
strikes targeted the commercial tankers Mombasa and Al Bahiyah (also reported
as Bahia) while they were transiting the southern shipping lane of the strait,
positioned within Omani territorial waters.
Dead Indians were on 'Mombasa'
The Indian national who lost his life was stationed aboard the Mombasa. The
ministry confirmed that of the eight wounded mariners, four sustained severe
injuries. The injured crew members comprise six Indian nationals and two Ukrainian
nationals.
The missile impacts triggered intense fires on both vessels and inflicted substantial
material damage. Emergency response teams and the remaining crew members successfully
brought the fires under control, preventing a wider environmental or maritime
disaster in one of the world's busiest chokepoints.
The UAE Ministry of Defence issued a strongly worded statement condemning the
action as a "blatant attack" and a "clear breach of international law". Abu
Dhabi warned that it reserves its "full right to respond to this escalation"
and will take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, citizens, and
national interests. Concurrently, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended
its deep condolences to the Government and people of India over the deaths.

Trump notifies Congress of war resumption
Meanwhile, just hours prior to the tanker strikes, US President Donald Trump
announced the reinstatement of the military blockade on Iranian shipping in
the Gulf, after consecutive nights of US Central Command airstrikes aimed at
degrading Iran's coastal missile and drone capabilities.
Trump also notified the Congress, in syc with its legislative move to clip
a President's war powers, that he is resuming the Iran war.
Asserting that outside powers will not dictate access to the Strait of Hormuz,
Iran imposed a fee on commercial ships wanting to cross the Hormuz.
Global energy markets reacted swiftly to the latest developments, with benchmark
Brent crude prices jumping nearly 8 per cent immediately following the news.
TAILPIECE: Observers point out that the second ceasefire agreement executed in Switzerland—an Iranian tactic likely bought into by Trump—mediated by Pakistan and Qatar—after much dillydallying by Iran that too intended to achieve a prolonged pause in the war—facilitated Tehran to take out the massive weeklong funeral procession of the late Khamenei attended by all leaders in public view without fear of any US attacks (as reported by IndiaTravelTimes earlier). With the mourning period concluded, Tehran has rapidly pivoted back to aggressive posturing: resuming strikes on US bases and tankers and attempting to impose transit fees on commercial vessels navigating the strait (as announced on June 18).

PROGNOSIS: It looks a Real New Trump is emerging - courageous, balanced, powerful and disinterested. Determined to save his country from the cliff, he has done quite a few draconian things that will reduce the burden of debts of the Federal entity, like the golden handshake, stopping senseless funding, pulling out of a worthless WHO. Shutting the Education Department is another. On the other hand, running it is also not the Centre's job either (We will convincingly elaborate it in the next chapter).
In India the scene is just the opposite. Centralisation is the core agenda and identity of the ruling dispensation without which it has no existence, or in other words, it exists for that set of schemes only. A realisation of this never dawned upon any Opposition party in 2014 or any time thereafter, what to talk of being able to see it coming 70 years ago! The terminations are part of a large-scale exercise going on all across Fed departments and organisations to reduce wasteful Government expenditure as decided by a Trump in a mess gone berserk, and improve administrative efficiency following the whims of billionaire and his associate Elon MusK and his DOGE. It has not been shared how terminations are going to raise the efficiency bar! It looks like Trump has stolen some of the prescriptions meant for India. But the American problems are quite different.
