Coronavirus toll mounts to 564 in China; Delhi Govt issues advisory for public: restrict physical contacts, avoid frozen meat, do frequent handwash, wear masks and seek medical opinion in case of flu-like symptoms

The Delhi Govt has asked the public to take precaution like avoiding shaking of hands and consumption of frozen meat, frequent handwashing, wearing of masks, seeking quick medical aid if symptoms appear, and taking help from the Control Room if needed (Ph: 011-22307145; 011-22300012; 011-22300036).

NEW DELHI, Feb 7: The Health & Family Welfare Department of the Government of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi has issued an advisory asking the public to take precautions against coronavirus, a zoonotic viral disease that has spread fast across several countries from China's Wuhan city where started first a couple of months ago. So far 564 people have died of coronavirus infection in China till Friday.

Coronavirus (nCov) is a highly contagious viral respiratory disease, showing flu-like symptoms of fever, running nose, muscular pain, cough, sore throat and difficulty in breathing after about a period of 10 days of incubation, leading subsequently to serious pneumonic conditions which can be fatal. There is no medicine or vaccine and the treatment is symptomatic. However, scientists have been successful in finding the DNA of the virus cell in a short span of time.

India has so far reported three positive cases of nCoV. All the three had returned to Kerala from China.

Till Friday, 564 patients died in China where the cases of infection spiked to 28,060. Elsewhere, in 24 other countries, 225 cases were reported and one died.

How to prevent coronavirus infection

1 Frequent handwashing with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub

2 Don't touch eyes/nose/mouth with unwashed hands

3 Cover nose and mouth with handkerchief when coughing or sneezing.

4 Wear medicated masks while moving in crowded places or travelling

5 Avoid physical contact with anyone having cold or flu-like conditions

6 Avoid shaking hands/hugging

7 Avoid spitting in public places

8 Avoid contact with animals

9 Avoid frozen meat

10 Report to hospital or contact helpline for suspected symptoms immediately

Even as there is no conclusive proof of how it began in Wuhan, it is widely believed that it started from fish and meat markets there. Some studies indicate the source of transmission as camels but there had also been reports of marine food of mysterious contamination finding its way to these markets several months earlier.

Human coronavirus was first identified in the 1960s. The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV) first appeared in 2002 in the Guangdong province of southern China. A later species that erupted in 2012 came to be known as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

With the pace of global travel and trade increasing phenomenally, infectious diseases spread very fast, heavily impacting social and economic activities.

The occurrence of new viral infections in quick succession is also becoming a serious global health challege. Avian influenza, Chikungunya, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, Dengue, Ebola virus disease, Hantavirus, Hand-foot-and-mouth disease, Japanese encephalitis, Nipah virus, Rabies, Rift Valley fever, Viral hepatitis are also among the other viral diseases posing serious threats currently, calling for stepped up international monitoring and healthcare management.
