Polls in Bengal, Assam, TN, Kerala, Pondy from Mar 27 to Apr 29
The Model Code of Conduct came into immediate effect in the poll-bound States. The counting of votes will take place on May 2. Precautions against covid are being taken.

NEW DELHI, Feb 27: The Assembly elections in Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry will be held from March 27 to April 29. Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora announced the poll schedule in New Delhi on Friday evening.

With the announcement the Model Code of Conduct came into immediate effect in the poll-bound States. The counting of votes in all the four States and the Union Territory will take place on May 2.

Polling in Bengal will be held in eight phases on March 27 and April 1, 6, 10, 17, 22, 26 and 29. Assam will go to the polls in three phases on March 27 and April 1 and 6. The Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry will be held in a single phase on April 6.

The Union Territory of Puducherry has 30 Assembly seats; five of them are reserved for the Scheduled Caste candidates. As the number of voters per booth has been restricted to 1,000 by the ECI, 607 new booths have been set up taking the total number of booths from 952 to 1559.

In view of the covid pandemic, the polling duration has been increased by one hour. Only two persons and two vehicles will be allowed along with the candidate for filing nominations. And only five volunteers will be allowed to undertake door to door campaign for candidates. The ceiling of poll expenditure has been fixed as Rs 22 lakh.

The polling staff will be vaccinated before the election and face masks, sanitisers and gloves will be provided.

The Chief Election Commissioner also announced byelection in Kanyakumari Lok Sabha constituency in Tamil Nadu and Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala. The polliing will take place on April 6.
