NEW DELHI, Aug 2: In view of a third wave threat of Delta covid, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have imposed restrictions on travellers from Maharashtra and Kerala, which have become India's covid hotspots, while cases are declining in other parts of the country. Both the States have made a negative RT-PCR test report not older than 72 hours mandatory for entry at the borders.

Anyone coming to Karnataka from Kerala or Maharashtra, by air, train, bus or personal vehicle will have to produce the negative covid test report, even if one is fully vaccinated, for entering the State.

Karnataka too is facing a steep hike in infections since last Wednesday when the new cases were just 1,531. Border checks are being introduced in the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Mysuru for those coming in from Kerala and in Belagavi, Vijayapura, Kalburgi and Bidar districts which are contiguous with Maharashtra.

Kerala reported 20,728 new cases, that is almost 50% of the national tally of 41,831, in the last 24 hours, raising the total so far to 34.1 lakh cases and the deaths went up to 16,837 with 56 new casualties being reported in the last 24 hours. In Maharashtra the new cases were 6,479, and the total 63.1 lakh. There were 157 new deaths, pushing up the total casualties to 1.33 lakh. Karnataka has registered a spurt in new cases with 6,479 testing positive for covid, the total cases so far rising to 29.1 lakh. The State reported 25 new deaths, the tally climbing to 36,587.

The Test Positivity Rate (TPR) in Kerala is ruling high with a percentage of 12.5 while the national average is 2.4%.

Meanwhile, in Delhi the TPR has moved up from a weekly average of 0.09% to 0.12%, highest in the last 25 days, according to the health department's bulletin. TPR is a crucial statistical metric that almost flawlessly indicates the extent of spread of the virus in a selected region.

Karnataka administered a total of 3,06,65,708 doses of covid vaccine with 65,77,674 receiving both doses while for Kerala the numbers were 2,03,70,704 and 60,85,174 and Maharashtra 4,46,72,654 and 1,12,31,791.

The total doses given throughout the country were 47,22,23,639 and in the last 24 hours the doses given were 17,06,598. India conducted 14,28,984 tests for covid in the country in the last 24 hours. The daily deaths in the country went up by 422 to reach a tally of 4,24,773.

ANALYSIS: "The standard operating procedure for deportations by aircraft used by ICE that is effective from 2012 provides for the use of restraints," says the Government.
