Seattle cop admits mistake in car hitting, killing Indian student without siren
SEATTLE, July 29: A Seattle police officer has admitted to mistakenly ploughing
his car into a 23-year-old Indian student without his siren fully activated
and overspeeding on January 23, killing her on the spot at a city crossing,
according to a new bodycam video released by prosecutors and published by PubliCola
last week.
"There’s nothing for me to do", policeman Kevin Dave admitted his mistake.
Jaahnavi Kandula was killed by the Seattle police car driven by Kevin Dave
as she was crossing a street. The footage shows Dave driving at 120 kmph without
using his siren and hitting and killing Jaahnavi Kandula in a crosswalk at 8
pm on January 23.
Hailing from Bengaluru, Jaahnavi was pursuing a Master of Science in Information
Systems at the Northeastern University’s Seattle campus. She came to the US
in 2021.
Kevin Dave was going to attend a high priority call when the accident took
place. The speed limits at the intersection of Dexter Avenue North and Thomas
Street are 40 kmph and 32 kmph, respectively. The video also shows the officer
performing CPR on Kandula.
“Lights were on. I was chirping the sirens…she was in the crosswalk. She saw
me, she started running through the crosswalk. Slammed on my breaks. Started
staying back where she should before crossing,” Dave can be heard in the video
telling a responding officer. (Dave had chirped his siren, but did not have
it running consistently.)
Charges against Dave will be framed in early August, prosecutors said.
Jaahnavi's "heartbroken" family had said in a statement, “She was a daughter
to a single mother who teaches elementary school in India ... In spite of earning
less than [$200] per month, her mother educated Jaahnavi and encouraged her
to [travel to] the United States hoping Jaahnavi would have a better future
and a better life abroad... Her mother’s hopes and dreams are cut short now.”
The Seattle Police Department in a statement expressed its “deepest condolences
to Kandula’s family, and called it “a terrible tragedy for everyone involved.”
Two days earlier, in a similar incident in the area, a domestic help was bitten by a pet dog in the lift when she was going for work.
