NEET will be 'scrapped', Stalin assures Tamil youth
"I do not know how to console Jagath- eeswaran's family, friends and relatives,"
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin said. He told the youth of the State that NEET
is a hurdle for their growth and it will be scrapped. The State Government is
actively working on the legal initiative in this direction. He also indicated certain
political changes happening in a few months which will sweep away obstacles
like NEET.
CHENNAI, Aug 14: Following the death of a NEET candidate and his father, Tamil
Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has said that the medical entrance examination
conducted by the Centre will be scrapped in the State.
"I appeal that no student should ever make a decision to take away their own
lives under any circumstances. The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET),
which is a hurdle for your growth, will be scrapped. The State Government is
actively working on the legal initiative in this direction," Stalin said in
a statement on Monday.
The 19-year-old medical aspirant died in Chennai on Friday after he failed
to clear the NEET exam twice. On Monday, Jagatheeswaran's father Selvam was
also found dead.
Stalin indicated certain political changes happening in a few months which
will sweep away obstacles like NEET.
"Then, all those who say 'I will not sign' will disappear,” the Chief Minister
said. He was referring to Governor RN Ravi 's remarks against the State's anti-NEET
bill.
"Definitely, we can remove NEET which proves to be an obstacle to your goals.
The Tamil Nadu Government is working vigorously towards that, he said.
"I offer my deepest condolences on the demise of student Jagatheeswaran and
his father Selvasekhar. Let their deaths be the last on the altar of NEET,"
Stalin said. "I do not know how to console Jagatheeswaran's family, friends
and relatives," he added.
The Assembly had earlier passed resolutions demanding NEET exemption for Tamil
Nadu. He said the Governor returned the first resolution and sent the second
one to the President for assent.
The NEET exam has become expensive and can be afforded only by the rich, he
said.
"The State Government introduced a 7.5 per cent reservation for the poor students
of Government schools in medical colleges. But, the Governor refuses to understand.
There is a doubt that he is acting like a puppet of the coaching centres," Stalin
alleged.
It is also reported that Jagatheeswaran had suffered from depression following
failure in the examination.
Two days earlier, in a similar incident in the area, a domestic help was bitten by a pet dog in the lift when she was going for work.
