As a result of a technical fault, flight plans had to be uploaded to systems manually, slowing or cancelling air traffic across the UK, affecting thousands of flights across Europe, since Monday. Hundreds of thousands of passengers were stuck at various airports in several countries, incurring heavy losses. The cascading effect will endure for several more days.

It is rumoured that the ATC failure was caused by a French airline submitting a faulty flight plan to the National Air Traffic Services (Nats).

LONDON, Aug 30: Over 2,000 flights have been cancelled since Monday due to a failure of the UK air traffic control systems. Flights risked cancellations, delays and diversions even as of Wednesday although the UK’s National Air Traffic Services chief executive Martin Rolfe said the problem has been fixed.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper has warned passengers that flights will continue to be affected for days because of the backlog.

The problem was caused by incorrect flight data being fed to the control system which it could not interpret. It was not caused by a cyber-attack, Martin Rolfe said.

The flights had to be run manually following the glitch on Monday morning and therefore the delays and cancellations occurred. Now even after the problem was fixed, the flights are affected because of the cascading impact, it was explained.

Night flying, usually restricted, will be allowed at all UK airports, which the department regulates, to clear the backlog.

Mayhem across Europe

Several UK airports and airlines including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and TUI, were hit by delays and cancellations since Monday.

Holidaymakers were hit the most by the delays on a bank holiday on Monday after a UK air traffic control technical failure meant flight plans had gone awry. On Monday 490 flights leaving UK airports like Gatwick, Heathrow, Manchester, Stansted, Luton and Edinburgh were cancelled, that is, 27 % of all flights and 785 arrivals, again 27% of all arrivals, had also to be cancelled. Heathrow had the maximum number of cancellations.

Hundreds of thousands of passengers were stuck at various airports in several countries, incurring heavy losses which cannot be compensated.

The flight cancellations caused mayhem across Europe and elsewhere. There were 1,585 flights cancelled on Monday, while 345 were axed on Tuesday.

British Airways has asked passengers to check the status of their flights before travelling to the airport.

A spokesman for Heathrow said flights would remain ‘significantly disrupted.’

What was the technical fault

Meanwhile, it is rumoured that the ATC failure was caused by a French airline submitting a flight plan to the National Air Traffic Services (Nats) in the wrong format.

“Our systems, both primary and the back-ups, responded by suspending automatic processing to ensure that no incorrect safety-related information could be presented to an air traffic controller or impact the rest of the air traffic system. There are no indications that this was a cyber-attack,” the NATS said.

The system failure is estimated to cost airlines GBP 100 million, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Two days earlier, in a similar incident in the area, a domestic help was bitten by a pet dog in the lift when she was going for work.
