MANALAPAN (New Jersey), Nov 10: Indian-American Vin Gopal has been re-elected
State Senator (Democrat) in New Jersey for a third term. He was first elected
in 2017 and re-elected in 2021.
At 38, he is currently the youngest member of the State Senate and the first
South-Asian American to be elected to the upper chamber.
A former Adjunct Professor at Monmouth University and currently a business
consultant, he chairs the Senate Education Committee.
This election, held on Tuesday, was the most expensive legislative races in
the State's history.
The off-year elections were also held in about a dozen other States. The rest of the States will elect their Governors, legislators and local officials alongwith the presidential and US Congress elections as also with the mid-term biennial polls.
Vin Gopal got 60% of the vote over GOP candidate Steve Dnistrian in Monmouth
County's 11th District constituency.
The Democrats also wrested both of the district’s Assembly seats from the Republicans
even as Gopal retained the Senate seat.
His running mates for the Assembly were Margie Donlon and Luanne Peterpaul,
Republican Assemblywomen Marilyn Piperno and Kim Eulner losing their seats by
7,000 votes each.
In 2021, Gopal had won re-election with 52% votes but his running mates lost.
“What we did tonight in Monmouth County is we drew political parties together
to bring this massive landslide. If that doesn’t send a message to our Opposition,
I don’t know what will,” Gopal said in his victory speech on Tuesday night in
Long Branch.
"This should tell every Republican Senator that when you’re running on culture
wars, you’re not doing anything productive for residents on affordability, taxes,
mental health. That should tell you that your message is not a good one,” Gopal
said. His supporters chanted, “Win with Vin!”
Gopal had focused on abortion, tax relief, and increased school funding for
local districts.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the election results from the
States "should be very good news for President Biden." Voters are clearly animated
by abortion rights and increasingly repelled by political extremism, she said.
Dems had big wins in Ohio, Virginia and Kentucky in what is called the off-year
elections.
Vin Gopal's bio: Formerly an Adjunct Professor at Monmouth University and currently
a business consultant, Gopal chairs the Senate Education Committee.
Born to Indian immigrants in Neptune Township and raised in Monmouth County,
Senator Gopal holds a Masters in Public Administration from Rutgers University
and a bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University.
In 2011 at the age of 26 he contested General Assembly election.
Gopal's parents came to the United States in the early 1970s from southern
India. They settled in New Jersey. Gopal married to Christina Zuk in September
2019. ?
When do New Jersey Senators have a two-year term:
New Jersey's legislature comprises the State Senate (40 seats) and Assembly
(80 seats). There are 40 districts. Each district has one representative in
the Senate and two in the Assembly. They serve four-year (not always) and two-year
terms, respectively.
However, New Jersey has a strange rule about Senators' term. They serve four-year
terms, except for the first term of a new decade, which is only two years. That
is a "2-4-4" cycle. This anomaly explains Vin Gopal's three consecutive wins
falling in 2017, 2021 and 2023.
What is an off-year election: New Jersey
general election is also called an off-year election. An off-year election is
explained in the electoral law as the general election of some States of the
United States which they hold separately - in odd years - when neither a presidential
election nor a midterm election - in even years - takes place.
