A roaring Michaung cyclone made a crashing landfall near Bapatla in southern coastal Andhra in the afternoon Tuesday devastating large swathes around, and accompanying torrents of storm surges barreled down everything in its way. BAPATLA (Andhra Pradesh), Dec 5: Over 50 flights and 100 trains were cancelled in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday as Michaung cyclone for the second successive day battered southern coastal areas and dumped huge amounts of rain inundating low-lying areas and paralysing life across districts around Bapatla between Nellore and Machilipatnam.

Flight operations came to a standstill at Vizag, Tirupati and Vijayawada airports.

Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna and NTR districts were battered by heavy to very heavy rains and strong winds. Power supplies were snapped. Crops suffered widespread damages.

After churning the Bay for long, Michaung (word meaning strength and resilience) began landfall around 3 pm as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with windspeeds of 110 kmph, and weakened into a Cyclonic Storm in the next two hours by 6 pm and ploughed northwards.

The IMD said that Michaung after landfall in south coastal AP moved northwards. The landfall process was completed by 4:30 pm. It lay centred at 15:30 hours IST of Tuesday over south coastal AP, about 20 km WSW of Bapatla and 45 km NNE of Ongole.

Eight districts were put on alert: Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema, Kakinada.

Peak storm surge was forecast to be in Bapatla, southern Andhra coast.

At landfall the severe cyclonic storm was to hit the coast at a 110 kmph speed. Storm surge at 1.5 m was to inundate low-lying areas.

On Monday evacuation of coastal belt had started and 300 relief camps were set up and 9,500 people were evacuated from coastal areas. The NDRF was fully geared to launch rescue and relief operations.

• Experts blame violation of the Visual Flying Rules (VFR) for most of the chopper crashes in the mountains as the leading cause. VFR means fly only visually - because of the lack of navigation aids in remote areas or unreliability of GPS-like aids in hilly terrains or a remote manipulation of instruments in cases of sabotage - as the topography plays havoc especially in the monsoon (mid-June to September).
• Even when VFR is followed, most crashes occur due to CFIT (Controlled Flight into Terrain) - that is, everything else is OK but the aircraft collides with hills or trees hidden by the clouds. This also occurs mostly in the monsoon.
• On Tueday with Manang, the chopper was brand new, pilot was highly experienced. But it hit an 'invisible' tree and then crashed against a hillside. This CFIT occurred when the pilot tried to dodge patches of clouds even as he was following the VFR.
• Simply put, everyone knows flying in the hills during the monsoon is risky, but the companies want to make more money in any which case. This type of tragedy is very frequently invited in the Indian hill State of Uttarakhand as well, where pilots are even made to fly without the mandatory rest.
